Porque visitar Machu Picchu?

MACHU PICCHU

“Machu Picchu, your history, mystery, and beauty are difficult to explain, but easy to feel.” (Carlos Mendoza )

aguas-calientesAguas Calientes is the real name of Machu Picchu Pueblo. This Peruvian town was founded in 1901, when the railroad was under construction in order to connect Santa Ana and Cusco. The town formed at the railroad camp of Maquinachayoq, 110 km. from Cusco. This is where heavy equipment was stored and workers who worked on the railroad were housed. Years later it was converted into a tourist town because of its strategic location close to the historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Aguas Calientes ( Machu Picchu Pueblo) is located at an altitude of 2040 meters above sea level.
The town is located less than 30 minutes by bus from the world’s most famous tourist attraction , Machu Picchu. All the folks who travel by train to see this sacred Indian city must pass through Aguas Calientes. It is the last stop on the train line that runs out of Cusco. The line is the property of the British company.PeruRail.
The town has developed a tourist related infra-structure that includes all classes of accommodations, from the most basic up to the most exclusive.
Among its attractions are the hot springs for which the town is named. ( Aguas Calientes means “hot waters.” ) The springs are located 800 meters from the town.

santuario-de-machupicchuThe Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu ( “machu picchu” means “old mountain”) Machu Picchu is the contemporary name of the ancient Andean community (llaqta) that was constructed by the Incas during the 15th century. It was built on a high saddle between Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu Mountains. Machu Picchu is located in the Eastern spur of the central Andean Cordillera in southern Peru at 2490 masl. (This is the elevation at the main plaza.)
According to documents dating from the 16th century, Machu Picchu was one of the vacation residences of the 9th Incan emperor, Pachacútec , who reigned from 1438 to 1470. Other historians indicate that Machu Picchu was used as a religious sanctuary. Machu Picchu is considered a masterwork of Incan architecture and engineering. Along with the incredible architecture, the amazing views and the deep mystery surrounding the Sanctuary have turned Machu Picchu into one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet.
Machu Picchu has been on Unesco’s list of Human Heritage Sites since 1983. The whole cultural and ecological complex is officially known as the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. On July 7, 2007, Machu Picchu was declared to be one on the Seven Wonders of the Modern world. The ceremony was held in Lisbon, Portugal, and hundreds of millions of people worldwide participated in the voting.
